 Synth1 is a software synthesizer for computer music use. It is both VSTi and DX compatible. The current version is freeware.
Functionally it is modelled on the Clavia Nord Lead 2Red Synth ; with the following characteristics:
* 2 Oscillators, FM modulation, ring modulation,sync,modulation envelope
* 4 types of filters, distortion
* 2LFO(synchronized with host)
* Arpeggiator (synchronized with host)
* Tempo delay (synchronized with host), stereo chorus/flanger
* Legato mode, portamento
* 16 notes polyphony
* 128 presets
* Thoroughly optimized for light CPU load using SSE instructions etc. It is quite possible to run 10 simultaneous instances on a Celeron 1.4 GHz system
* Automation (only in VSTi mode)

| I just have to write a line about this little jewel. I keep coming back to it cos I know it can create some sweet sounds. There are some brilliant presets/patches out there that can be tweaked to fit your needs. I just love this thing. |

This is the best free VSTi, #1, no discussion, non of the other freebies comes even close.
It's a REAL synthesizer...
Look for presets on the internet, cause the internal ones don't represent it right.
Creating new sounds is a joy, cause this synthesizer has real potential.
If you don't have one by now, get it once you're finished reading this.
Or you're missing out big time. |

| Question: With some synths in Cubase SX3...Every time I hit STOP...the synths will revert to some preset, or to default, by itself...does anyone know what causes this??? |

@ Moerschbacher:
Sounds like you have some CC event thats triggering it. Make sure the midi file contains notes only (no events) and see if that fixes it |

Synth1 is clearly the best free synth I know, and is worth the best commercial ones (Arturia,...). It's a kind of Nord Lead 2 emulation. Not an exact replica but the philosophy of both synths is the same (and both do sound great!)
There are plenty of patches & banks available for free on the net, and some are truely amazing (Nolwenn's one for exemple, but not only hers).
This one is clearly a must have in your setup. Too bad it does not exist for Mac. |

Hmmm .. perhaps he sounds good ?!
BUT the GUI is very ugly and inefficent,
not a "Music Instrument", looks for me
as a Switchboard for the railway ;) Sorry |

| A "Music Instrument" can look like anything. synth1 is an instrument and not a product. Sound-wise, this is a great synth and it is well laid out, even if it's ugly. Do your self a favor and try it, because it's one of the best, free or not. |

| I love this little synth. Regardless of whether or not the gui looks good, I've done the synth tracks to some of my songs solely using this synth. It's amazing on older computers that lack in the processing department and is one of my go to synths when working on my laptop. |
