This dynamic processor manages audio transients.
Turning the central button on the sweet side, decreases the transients amplitude. On the bitter side, the transients amplitude is magnified. Bitter-Sweet also features a control for the signal to be processed. When the main position is engaged, the process affects the stereo signal. If Center is engaged, only the M signal of the internal MS matrix is processed. If stereo is selected, only the S signal from the MS matrix is processed. As all Flux:: plug-ins it features 64 bit floating point processing, up to 8 channels and up to 8 FS (384 KHz). Center and Stereo Mode are only available in stereo (2 channels) processing.

Compressor is a plugIn for the reduction of the dynamics of an input signal. Compressors achieve this goal by analyzing the amplitude envelope of the incoming signal and reducing the gain when the signal exceeds a certain threshold. This reduces the amplitude of the peaks in the audio signal. Now the signal can be amplified further without clipping/distortion. Dynamics processors are essential when recording, mixing and editing music. But when it comes to compressing an entire sum signal, a lot of digital compressors turn out to be unusable, many of them were made to process single-track signals only.
On complex sources they tend to produce a 'pumping' sound, distort or just make your music lifeless. There are manufacturers telling you 'this is the only compressor you'll ever need'. Don't believe them. Sound signals are far too complex to be handled by a single device.

GComp is a combined compressor and limiter for controlling the dynamics of an audio signal.
GComp tracks both the peak and the RMS level of the incoming signal. The level considered for compression can be either of these, or a mix of both. The mix is controlled by the RMS/Peak parameter.
The compression curve is defined by the Threshold, Ratio, Limit and Softness parameters, and is displayed on the GUI.
The GUI also features a wave-display that shows the compression and limiting thresholds relative to the incoming audio. |

GComp2 is a compressor featuring a band-pass filter and a gate.
The compression is controlled with the Attack, Release and Compress parameters. The Compress parameter controls the compression curve, replacing the usual threshold and ratio parameters.
The level of the signal going into the compressor also affects the result. The Gain parameter controls the input gain. The Output parameter can be used to control the output level.
The gate is actually an expander, which turns the signal down when it drops below a given threshold. The Gate parameter sets that threshold. |

GMax is a maximizing limiter. It is designed to boost the level of the signal without letting the peaks exceed a given maximum.
The Gain parameter sets the desired boost in volume. The signal will be boosted by this amount before going into the limiter.
The limiter reduces the signal level as necessary to keep it below that specified by the Ceiling parameter. The Release parameter sets the time taken for the limiter to recover after turning the volume down.
A meter is displayed on the GUI showing the gain reduction applied by the limiter. The resolution of this meter is 1dB per bar. |

VST psychoacoustic compressor
Conventional compressors are based on peak or rms-level estimation to compute their time-variant gain or attenuation. This property of most compressors often causes undesirable intermodulation distortion and pumping/breathing artefacts.
JB PC-2 features a 'psycho-acoustic relevance' mode. Instead of using a peak or rms-level estimation, this mode employes a perceptual loudness model to compute the loudness of the input signal. This perceptual loudness model is combined with advanced attack and release stages that model peripheral adaptation of the human auditory nerve. The result is a very transparent compression characteristic, even with very short attack and release times.
On the other hand, the simple, classic compression behavior can be engaged too by simply switching off the complex loudness model. |

Rough Rider is a modern compressor with a bit of "vintage" style bite and a uniquely warm sound. Perfect for adding compression effects to your drum buss, it also sounds great with synth bass, clean guitar, and backing vocals. Definitely not an all-purpose compressor, Rough Rider is at its best when used to add pump to rhythmic tracks. Of course, you can use it however you'd like. The Compressor Police aren't gonna come to your house and give you a citation. Slap it on a track and crank some knobs.
The front panel layout is done the same as many hardware compressors, so it will be immediately obvious how to use it. A brief overview of the controls:
Ratio: The ratio knob is logarithmic in operation. Completely anti-clockwise is 1:1, and completely clockwise is 1:1000. The 12 o'clock position is 1:10, so everything to the left of center is single digits, and everything to the right is "atom bomb squish," essentially.
Attack and Release: We left off the actual time values, so you're gonna have to use your ears, like the he-men did it in times of myth.
Meter: That honking big dial in the middle of the UI is the gain reduction meter. It basically shows how much compression is occurring.
Sensitivity: usually called "threshold" now, but we think "sensitivity" always made more sense. Turn to the right, you get more compression, essentially. Turn it all the way to the right, and you've got a distortion box, the sound of which is tuned by Ratio, Attack, and Release.
Makeup: 30 dB of gain to compensate for the attenuation caused by the compressor.
Active: From the front panel, this is simply an off/on switch, but if you automate it, strange things happen...
MIDI Learn: Like all of our products, the VST version has MIDI Learn. Download any manual from the current product line for an explanation of how this works, as it is common among all our VST products.
Rough Rider is available as a VST effect for Windows, and an AU or VST for OSX. The OSX versions are Universal Binaries, and require OSX
10.4.0 or later.

Minimum pressure will require compensation on the output knob since the attack/ratio will let through more of the signal. |
